For us, it's all about Alvon Johnson. The blues singer and guitarist was an original member of the Coasters, the "Clown Princes of Rock 'n' Roll" in the 1950s. His is the deep bass voice famous for anchoring songs including "Charlie Brown" and "Yakety Yak." So while the Bayview Hunters Point International African Marketplace has much to offer, we can't stop thinking about Alvon Johnson (who plays today at 1:45 p.m.) and randomly shouting "Don't talk back!"
The kid-friendly event also features mask making, clowning performances, and clowning lessonsway to take face-painting a step further, Prescott Family Circus! Next week the marketplace features Sila and the Afro-Funk Experience, whose music is politically engaged West African funtime, but this weekend's fest is packed with classes, foods, crafts, and many other opportunities to show off your dance moves. The International African Marketplace starts at noon (and continues Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 30).
