MC Lyte brings the club bangers

Brooklyn's MC Lyte (Lana Moorer) is probably the only major female rap star to never be embroiled in a scandal. Even without the scuffles, though, she's better known as a hip-hop personality than for her early '90s club bangers like "Ruffneck" and "Cold Rock a Party" (she's currently a host for various VH1 specials, and she's a teacher on MTV's Celebrity Rap Superstar). Lyte's last album, the independently released Da Underground Heat Vol. 1, didn't hit the mainstream radar, but it featured strong, club-worthy songs — including collaborations with Jamie Foxx — that showed she's still musically relevant. Lyte will appear with top hip-hop live band the Roots and the original showstopper Big Daddy Kane on Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Fillmore at 8 p.m. Admission is $40; call 346-6000 or visit for more info. S.F.'s Josh Bea is DJ B.Cause, a mixmaster with a penchant for creating remixes that smartly blend old soul tunes with contemporary hip-hop jams. His astute ear for key and melody results in mixes that sound like they were originally created that way. To wit, his new disc, Night of the Remix 2, blends gospel with Dr. Dre, and Marvin Gaye with OutKast: disparate tastes that taste great together. B.Cause, along with Vin Roc, Satva, and Haylow, will spin sets for "Night of the Remix" on Friday, Sept. 14, at Milk at 9 p.m. Admission is $5-10; call 387-6455 or visit for more info. —T.P.

Low B made his name in the DJ world as half of the Hollertronix duo, which he formed in Philadelphia with Diplo. The now-Brooklyn-based artist has a great ear for crafting a party record, throwing together slamming dancehall tracks with the occasional pop gem. Low Budget also seems particular to the Bay Area; he's a big fan of our hip-hop scene, often incorporating records by titans like E-40 and Too $hort, and keeping an ear to young stars like the Pack. He'll join resident DJs Vin Sol and Morse Code to get hyphy at "Superfriends" on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Milk at 10 p.m. Admission is $5-10; call 387-6455 or visit for more info. —T.P.
