It's not the warmest September on record, but who cares when you can cozy up to your honey and watch a movie outdoors? The San Francisco Film Society and the Presidio Trust celebrate their sixth year of Film in the Fog, which turns inclement weather into a fine occasion for a family-friendly soiree. A picnic and classic big band fare from the SuperSonic Saxes (of the Air National Guard Band of the West Coast) add to the vintage ambience, but it's Jack Arnold's 1954 B-movie Creature From the Black Lagoon that makes freezing your ass off well worth it. In it, a group of researchers (played by Julia Adams, Richard Carlson, Antonio Moreno, and others) make a trip to the Amazon, but then a lusus naturae in the form of a "gill man" starts killing off the team … well, except for the one nubile hottie in the bunch. A dramatic score, provocative themes about evolution and ecological responsibility, and love among freaks of nature set the standard for current eco-horror films, and for good reason.
