Sandy Land

They battle tides, hermit crabs, and hypodermic needles, but the most feared threat for sandcastle artists has to be the small, young child. Today Ocean Beach will be awash in both, with hundreds of wide-eyed children worshipping the huge silica structures like they're in Children of the Corn, saying creepy things like, "Mother, I want to destroy the sandcastle. Let me destroy the sandcastle." Touted as "the largest sandcastle building contest in Northern California," as if there were some competition for that honor, the 24th annual Sandcastle Classic brings together architects, engineers, contractors, and kids from dozens of Bay Area schools to erect new worlds before the tide comes in, earning money for the arts-in-school nonprofit LEAP. Music is provided by surf band the Mermen.
