The San Francisco Oyster is not your typical urban race. For one, competitors don’t know where each leg of the race will take them until they finish the previous leg. But the bigger issue is the means of locomotion. Organizers will have competitors run, climb stairs, swim, kayak, bike, and inline skate -- or not, as they see fit. They might even have you ride the bus. Navigation plays a key role, and the legs are interspersed with brain teasers to make it all that much more unsettling. It's billed as an "urban adventure race," so think Amazing Race crossed with Eco-Challenge. It sounds fun, but it's not for the unfit. The course covers 40-50 miles and takes between 6-8 hours to complete (though racers are split into teams of three).
