Chuck Prophet's music covers rock and blues, and then veers unexpectedly into dance-pop with vintage keyboards. There's Warren Zevon, Lee Hazlewood, Lou Reed, and Tom Petty in his voice, but he thinks he's Alex Chilton. The man on the recordings sounds girl-crazy, desperate for more love, spoiled and impatient but still seductive, in the way talented men so often are. Against a background of soaring guitars and the Vine Street Christian Church Children's Choir of Nashville, Tennessee, Prophet's voice becomes positively Lucinda Williams–ish. The songs on his new CD Soap and Water tell stories, make innuendo, pay homage to Bob Dylan, and tend to spin out into beautiful old-fashioned jamming codas. Also, he's hired the El Tonayense taco truck to cater his CD release party.
