Life Not Wasted on the Living: Word!

"What is the role of literary performance in social transformation?" is one of the driving questions behind the Living Word Festival. Urban contemporary artists come together at this insistently interdisciplinary gathering every year to give that and other burning questions a thorough going-over. Sometimes, they even provide some answers. Unless you think — like we do — that literary performance is socially transformative, in which case, Living Word is an answer all by itself. Local favorite Marc Bamuthi Joseph helms the fest's centerpiece, Scourge, a look at Haiti through dance, poetry, and music. Today's Living Word offering is "The People Could Fly," a celebration of black dance featuring Laura Elaine Ellis, Eclipse, Amara Tabor-Smith, and Adia T. Whitaker.
