There are few DJ-related DVDs worth plunking down that hard-earned cash for, but the new History of DJ Krush is a compelling compendium. It chronicles in audio and documentary form the highlights of Krush's 16-year career. Japan's most famous waxmaster is his country's top hip-hop and electronic music producer, which is no easy feat. But his delicate, sensual melodies — whether instrumental or with American and Japanese MCs rhyming on top — easily transcend international and cultural boundaries. Nearly a decade ago, Mo'Wax impresario James Lavelle and DJ Shadow came together under the U.N.K.L.E. banner. Under that moniker they crafted the lauded Psyence Fiction disc — a sporadically brilliant blend of breakbeats, samples, symphonic electro-soul, and vocal turns by the likes of Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft, and Ian Brown. Shadow subsequently split, leaving Lavelle at the helm of a collaborative venture that's since struggled against the perception that it was only good when Shadow was involved. U.N.K.L.E.'s new album, War Stories, pairs Lavelle with stoner-rock legend Chris Goss, plus guests Josh Homme, Massive Attack's 3D, the Cult's Ian Astbury, and others. It takes U.N.K.L.E. in a grittier, sun-scorched, guitar heavy direction and is the project's most cohesive album yet. As if juggling complicated love affairs, yo-yo dieting, and medical marijuana legislation didn't make your personal life enough of a three-ring spectacle, the Transfer is now offering a new circus-themed monthly called "Big Top." Dreamed up by nightlife stalwart Joshua J, the party does an admirable job of leveraging its Church Street location, at last bringing together art fags, lesbians, club kids, and drag queens with their soigné Castro brethren. The first two Big Top installments featured DJ sets by Juanita More, and packed the halls of the Transfer to capacity. Somewhere along the way, lovely UK fashion designer Kim Jones heard about the soiree, and will be on hand to spin at this weekend's "homo fashion costume ball" on Sunday, Oct. 28, at the Transfer at 7 p.m. Call 861-7499 for more info. — Evan James
