Radio Play

Been itching to check out local acts that have been sopping up local ink while simultaneously supporting UC Berkeley's beloved free-form radio station? Well, the people behind tonight's KALX 45th Anniversary Show definitely have you in mind. The show opens with the folkstortion-tinged drone-pop of Greg Ashley. Whether solo or with his allegedly defunct combo the Gris Gris, Ashley wraps the druggy feedback chug of Spacemen 3 around a memorable melody better than nearly anyone since the heyday of the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Cute-core, cuddly Casiotone-slingers Social Studies provide angular disco catchiness to the proceedings, leaving the rest of the night for the booty-shaking set with performances by Chow Nasty and Sugar and Gold. The former's horny, cornball funk is the stuff of legend, and has been found everywhere from basement shows to gigs with MC Hammer and Cameo. Sugar and Gold, on the other hand, kind of sounds like Cameo; its upbeat, slippery soul blend should set the right note for year 45.

DJ Yoni Wolf starts the show.
