Try Not to Lose Your Head

Hip hop dance has come a long way from the urban streets (and, shortly thereafter, the suburban bedrooms) of the '80s, showing up prominently and a wee disturbingly this year on prime time TV, when dancer Hok pretended he was a hummingbird on So You Think You Can Dance. The San Francisco Hip Hop Dance Fest, however, immediately sets the right wayback tone on its site, using Grandmaster Flash's classic "The Message" over a video of the performers on the home page. Since 1999, festival founder and Artistic Director Micaya has been bringing together groups from across the country while always maintaining a heavy Bay Area presence. This year's locals include Future Shock, Mind Over Matter, SoulForce, Neopolitan, FBC, Diamond/Sparkle, Funkanometry SF, SoulSector, Loose Change, Sunset, and U.F.O Movement. The out-of-town contingent includes Chicago's FootworKINGz, New York's Mop Top, Vancouver's Over the Influence, Los Angeles' Lux Aeterna, Miami's Live in Color, Japanese performers Kenichi and Takahiro, and Nobulus from Vienna, Austria. The total lineup features more than 20 acts, but you'll have to catch two separate programs to see them all. Tonight, program B starts at 8.
