Tiefschwarz: German brothers bring down the (electro) house

Brothers Ali and Basti Schwarz record together as Tiefschwarz. The DJs, who were raised in the German city of Stuttgart, now live in Berlin, where their singles and remixes for big-ticket artists like Madonna and Depeche Mode stand out against the stauncher techno of the local scene. Tiefschwarz makes use of bright melodies normally associated with house music. The pair recently commemorated a big anniversary with the release of Blackmusik: 10 Years of Tiefschwarz, a double-disc set featuring a typical Tiefschwarz DJ set (house, electro, techno, rock, all jammin' together in harmony) and past singles remixed by colleagues. Check out the first-ever local Tiefschwarz DJ appearance on Saturday, Dec. 15, at Mighty at 10 p.m. Admission is $20; call 762-0151 or visit www.mighty119.com for more info. Tamara Palmer

If house music fans were in charge, Chicago-based DJ and producer Derrick Carter would have been given the key to our fair city and probably many others worldwide long ago. He's proven on countless visits to S.F. that he knows how to unlock a deep groove, particularly with his original compositions, on which he often sings; the songs are quirky affairs that smartly capture late-night club confusion and ground revelers in bottom-heavy grooves. One of the most sought-after mixmasters in all of electronic music, Carter brings his brand of "boompty-boomp" funk on Saturday, Dec. 15, at Ruby Skye at 8 p.m. Admission is $15; call 693-0777 or visit www.rubyskye.com for more info. — T.P.
