Roasting A Chestnut

Most reviews of The Hard Nut can be paraphrased as follows: "OMG! OMG! This choreographer puts both men and women in the corps de ballet! Also: Go-go boots!" This is OK if you find men in skirts and women in (OMFG!) suits to be wacky or nouveau. We don't, and neither does the man responsible. "I don't believe snowflakes have sexual characteristics of any kind," reasons Mark Morris, the creator of this beloved outré/avant-garde/risqué/not-really retelling of the most enragingly repeated ballet on Earth. It's not news to put men in tutus: Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo is a company that has done nothing else for the last 33 years. So if you ask us, The Hard Nut is interesting because it's great, not because it's "gender-blind." Morris is obviously having his cake and eating it too, by fucking with The Nutcracker as well as siphoning off its audience. Color, talent, humor, fashion, and humorous fashion enliven the production.
