Multiple Personalities

Danny Hoch looks like your average white guy in a track suit. But inside those pedestrian racing stripes is something Berkeley Rep director Tony Taccone calls "his agile voice, his expressive body, his sharp mind." (Keep in mind that as a director, Taccone probably doesn't have nice things to say about just anyone.) He's borne out by critics -- notably New York City critics, who don't have nice things to say about just anyone -- who write that Hoch's way of performing as Trinidadian New Yorkers, Dominican New Yorkers, Cuban New Yorkers, and white guys in track suits is intelligent, skillful, and nuanced. In Taking Over, the actor takes on gentrification and spins funny stories out of it, using the voices of his Brooklyn neighbors. Next up for Hoch is the silver screen: He'll join Drew Barrymore onscreen in Lucky You and Eva Mendes and Mark Wahlberg in We Own the Night.
