Bastard Out of England

After growing up in England, writer Linda Robertson moved to the city, suffered through our unique brand of hell, and ended up Miss Accordion San Francisco 2004. You can imagine the story in that, but don't bother: She's written a book. What Rhymes with Bastard? chronicles her fun times in the city, featuring sticky cabaret, open relationships, strippers, artists, magicians, overpopulated apartments, a cat, and, ultimately, her successful quest to become an accordion queen. The book is available only in England for now, though, so you'll have to settle for hearing Robertson read about her travails tonight. But, like any good local author, she brings friends. The Golden Melody Band, a quartet (with accordion) plans to mess around with genres, from ragtime and classical to tango and klezmer, while fronted by soprano Katherine Growdon, who has performed with a string of local opera companies.
