Just Add Water

Yes, fellow Earth dwellers, the latest signs of global warming are disturbing. Yes, American diners, the "Do Not Eat" list of fish and seafood species is distressingly long. Yes, citizens of San Francisco, a frigging oil tanker spewed a load of gooey gunk in our own beloved bay just two months ago. But there's plenty of good news out there. Like a bottle washed up on the shore stuffed with messages of hope, the fifth San Francisco Ocean Film Festival offers a slew of inspiring vignettes from around the world. Papa Tortuga describes the community activism in Veracruz that has enhanced the prospects of the endangered local sea turtle. The feature-length documentary Saving Luna captures the human reaction when a baby orca settles just off the edge of Vancouver Island. Another group of curious people, top-rank sea kayakers dueling in the wildest water imaginable, are on glorious display in Scottish Tidal Races. And the iconoclastic septuagenarian Bay swimmer and ex-barman George Farnsworth — an authentic San Francisco character — lights up 19 Arrests, No Convictions, an invigorating half-hour portrait by Judy Irving (The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill) receiving its world premiere. Come on in, the water's fine.
