Long Live the Queen

It's all here: Queensrÿche has everything you need in a metal band. Umlaut? Check. Male falsetto harmonies? Check. Charting late-'80s power ballad? Yes. Fans know the band is more accurately called a prog-metal group, and appreciate the 1988 concept album Operation: Mindcrime and the quintet's record-label struggles and lineup changes throughout the 1990s. But for most of us, it's about a concert experience featuring girls with heavy eyeliner and denim-jacketed dudes rocking out, lighters aflame, to "Silent Lucidity." Queensrÿche's latest album is Take Cover, and critics say the all-covers record is awesome, especially "Heaven on Their Minds," a Judas Iscariot song from Jesus Christ Superstar, a very metal idea whose time has come.
