If the average mall gives you the jibblies, with its mass-produced crap and advertising that screams, "Why aren't you made of plastic yet, bitch?," we suggest you stop going. Seriously, it's possible to survive without mall visits. Even frivolous impulse buying (which everyone needs to do sometimes) is easily accomplished at enclaves like the Mission Indie Mart. This recurring event features high-style, low-tech local designers and the one thing you'd think a regular mall would get right, but doesn't: cheap beer. Hair clips, kids' clothes (organizers say the Mart is "kid-friendly despite the cursing"), hoodies, man-jewelry, and art are on sale, and the vibe is hipster. Wallets, scarves, doodads, and vintage clothing: Skip the child-labor emporiums, and hang out with the guy who knitted your beer cozy.
