Watch 'Em Work

The best live drawing event of the year, the Monster Drawing Rally, has so many contributing artists -- nearly 125 -- that organizers have to split them up into four one-hour shifts. To newcomers, it can seem a crowded, chaotic event, but underneath there's order. Once an artist finishes a piece, a hall monitor sort of person carries it over to the display wall, holding it forth like the morning laundry -- followed by the eyes of nearly everyone in the place -- and hangs it up. At that point the work is officially for sale, and a minor frenzy among the crowd does or does not erupt, depending on the drawing -- or the name behind the drawing. In past years, work by artists such as Kelly Tunstall had the crowd surging toward the wall (and Tunstall was game, churning out her rabbit-eared ladies with a thrilling speed during her shift). At this year's event, each illustration goes for $60, up $10 from last year, but open that wallet: the rally is still a fundraiser for nonprofit art gallery Southern Exposure.
