Although Saturday's Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival at the Palace of Fine Arts is sure to be, uh, slamming, one local act is not on the lineup: The Conspiracy of Beards. Perhaps Harmony has something against 30-member groups who exclusively perform the songs of Leonard Cohen (though it's likely the other way around). Anyway, it's our gain, since the hat-wearing, sometimes-hirsute Beards will be in fine shape to be the musical accompaniment to "Point of Paradox," a group exhibit of Bay Area artists, curated by Dan Johnson of Adobe Books Backroom Gallery. The work explores contradiction and shifting perspectives, such as Alexis Mackenzie's stunning Audubon-like portraits of plants made up of stuff like bird wings, butterflies, and fish fins. The opening reception starts at 6 p.m.
