All you need to know in order to be a responsible audience member at the Mitch Marcus Session is this: Clap for the solos you like. Think of the soloist as a high-diver, and consider the steady bass, reliable drums, and warm guitar to be both pool water and diving board. The musician's job is to show off as many twists and turns as possible in the space between the notes. Those explosive, surprising fireworks make jazz (here, it's bebop. Or postbop. Whatever — it's mostly bop-related) into the complex, satisfying brew it is. Marcus, a gifted and talented tenor saxophonist, welcomes his own high-class crew including bass player George Ban-Weiss, guitarist Mike Abraham, Sylvain Carton on saxophone, and rotating drummers, but he also wants you. The Session is a jam, man. Bring your ax and join the hip and jazz-mad scene.
