Remember Hey Faggot?

Savage Love, the wildly popular sex column by Dan Savage, the editorial director of Seattle's alt-weekly The Stranger, is not just smart and egalitarian — it's also grammatical. Savage Love has been, for 17 years, a gold standard for writing of all kinds, not just for snarky advice columns. Savage’s responses to genuine and genuinely bizarre questions are honest (he was in favor of the war, for a while), intelligent (aka witty), and open-minded (he engages in sincere conversations with people whose opinions he does not like). So while "HIO," or "honest, intelligent, and open-minded" is not as catchy as Savage's famous advice for lovers — to be "GGG" or "good, giving, and game" — it's still something we may all strive toward, inspired by this profane contrarian. Savage appears with fellow advice columnist and controversy-starter Amy Richards in conversation with Steven Winn.
