It's hard not to grant The Twilight Zone an honorary place in the pecking order of cult television. After all, how many other shows encapsulated premillennial anxiety and that uncomfortable gray area between scientific progress and the human condition better than this artifact of televised arcana? (And where else can you find such riotously deadpan renderings of gremlins, cannibalistic aliens, and omniscient narrators?) Impossible Productions sucks viewers into the weird, wacky fifth dimension in the next installment of its wildly popular series, Twilight Zone: The Plays, Season V. Almost one-upping the predictable boob tube maneuvers of the show, the plays use a medley of stage gambits to thwart viewer expectations with twists and turns more vertiginous than M. Night Shyamalan could ever concoct. The anthology includes classic chestnuts like "The Hitchhiker," a road-trip horror story about a young woman trailed by a phantom stalker en route to destinations unknown. The plays skillfully pluck disparate elements from the annals of 20th-century pop culture while achieving that fine balance between camp and the macabre that still makes The Twilight Zone so damn watchable today.
