A quick look at the press surrounding Jose Canseco’s new book, Vindicated: Big Names, Big Liars, and The Battle to Save Baseball, reveals one thing: Everybody hates Jose Canseco! Of course, many sports writers get a little hot when “the game” gets sullied, and the idea that this self-proclaimed whistle-blower is profiting off the mess is just too much for them. Mike Lupica of the Daily News calls him a “world-renowned dancing bear.” Wallace Matthews of Newsday.com says he’s “guilty of criminal impersonation of a writer.” Sports Illustrated’s Phil Taylor says he should have named the book Desperate: Another Attempt to Wring a Few More Bucks Out of the Same Old Subject. And it just goes downhill from there.
