In 2002, Sarah Klein set up an oven in the lobby of San Jose’s Fairmont Plaza Office Tower and got people to make bread. She also makes homemade books about bread and videos about bread and she organizes the Brick Oven Bread Bakers Conference, which deals with … bread. She’s hot for bread, but not only in an edible way -- all of the above activities (save the conference) make up her art projects. As she says on her site, she uses the stuff to explore consumption, competition, and ecology. It’s easy to see why: Comprised of just flour, water and salt, bread is a simple, basic, universal food, and it can be turned into fish if you’re the son of God. Klein is the perfect artist to curate the “Taste 2008 Exhibition,” the yearly blowout of art that appeals to the senses. This year finds 18 artists exploring all things food, sometimes using food itself as the medium.

An opening reception starts at 7 p.m. on April 12, but if the work makes you hungry for more, stop by the Taste 2008 fundraising event (though beware the $75-$150 admission) on April 17, which has a handful of chefs from local restaurants providing food, along with music by Leyna Noel.
