We sat in a little silence again, and then Mike rose to leave. "Nice to meet you, Katy," he said, shaking my hand. My inner dialogue was happy to have experienced this little San Francisco vignette.

Before I left the Nag's Head I checked my cell phone. There was a message from my dad. "I'm coming in May," he said, "after I can finish preparing for the next semester."

Dude will never retire.

"Okay, dad," I texted back. "Can't wait to see you again."
