Don't you hate it when Gawker just suddenly discovers something you were reading in 1997 when the author was still in high school and a friend of yours bought it off her between classes? We sure do. Ariel Schrag grew up to be a writer for The L Word, but before that she was an empowered Berkeley High kid scribbling out zine versions of her comics, Awkward and Definition. (God, we're so glad someone else remembers L7!) Those two alerted some of us to a major new talent as well as a then-new form, the graphic novel, aka non-superhero comic book. Both are now reissued in a single volume; if you went to high school, you will enjoy them. Her third book, Potential, tells the story of Schrag’s junior year and of her coming out of two closets (gay and bi); a film version is in production with Rose Troche (Go Fish) directing. Tonight, the author presents a slide show including material from all of the above and possibly some from the senior-year book (not out yet), Likewise.
