Oozing Stage Presence

Those tired of typical theatrical offerings will appreciate the series Attack of the Killer B-Movies: Live! The dramaturges of Foul Play specialize in campy Grand Guignol pieces that aim to scare the bejeezus out of you (or just make fun of the cinematic horror conventions that try to). Tonight's installment is based on screenwriter Kate Phillips' The Molten Meteor, a script that would become the 1958 B-movie epic The Blob (and later inspire the ominous dollops of slime in supermarket vending machines everywhere). Playwright Sean Owens' lowbrow brand of comedic mayhem follows the trajectory of an alien form that wreaks havoc on the unsuspecting residents of sleepy Downington, Pennsylvania. Considering that the film, which starred Steve McQueen, was a drive-in classic, the play is aptly packed with brooding heartthrobs, sweet-cheeked girls next door, and other teen archetypes who save the day.
