Richie Hawtin breaks his moment of silence to celebrate techno

By Tamara Palmer

Published on May 27, 2008 at 2:39pm

Popular DJ and producer Richie Hawtin found a creative way to mark the 10th birthday of his techno label Minus, one of the most respected in the world: he kept quiet. The company and its affiliated artists started 2008 by observing a ten-week period of silence from new releases or performances in order to, in Hawtin's words, "reflect and refocus our energy, ideas, and inspiration." Having that phase out of the way, Minus is currently celebrating by making noise at anniversary parties, which feature music that is intricate, melodic, and driving without falling prey to techno's twin pitfalls of gimmickry and heavy-handedness.
