Something Bad HappenedBy Hiya SwanhuyserPublished on June 14, 2008 at 4:23amLinda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir, former Tubes guitarist Bill Spooner, Public Defender Jeff Adachi: A very broad coalition of local notables comes together for the 10th Anniversary Tribute to James Byrd Jr. of Jasper, Texas. Mr. Byrd, as you may remember, was killed by white supremacists who dragged him behind their truck in 1998. Today's event may commemorate a horrifying moment in U.S. history, but the participants see it as an uplifting affirmation of progress and the continuing fight against bigotry. Supervisor Jake McGoldrick, powerhouse artist Rhodessa Jones, and members of Mr. Byrd's family plan to speak as well. Organizer Lani Silver of the James Byrd Jr. Racism Oral History Project says she hopes to remind audiences "how far we have come and how far we have to go and [how] by sharing our experiences with racism, we can reduce it."
