From the time you gave her a mohawk to the time you made her custom "clothes" to all the time you spent thinking about her feet, Barbie's had a hold on you. At "Twisted Elements," sculptor Joni Younkins-Herzog goes past the annual "Altered Barbie" exhibit — the work there tends toward lowbrow, untrained, and mocking, which is very, very right for doll-based art and always fantastically snarky (it's coming up next week.) But Younkins-Herzog's tack is to create what she calls "Spiders" from her own bronze, gypsum, or Fiberglas reproductions of Barbie legs. Sometimes outfitted with custom "clothes," the leg bouquets set their little tiptoes precariously on the floor; the effect is supercreepy. Susan Latta also contributes her concrete and steel works.
