As all good fetishists know, God and the erotic are two great tastes that taste great together. There’s an especially sweet place in heaven, however, for those who grow up Roman Catholic and queer. In their anthology Queer and Catholic, editors Arnie Evans and Trebor Healey gather a flock of stories from former altar boys, Pope devotees, and rosary wringers who either fled from or eroticized their faith. The results, less interested in dogma than experience, range from droll to poignant. Where else could one read about how one writer “hoped to be the first female pope, until I found out there already was one?” Contributors reading include Susan Leonardi, Ed Wolf, Nora Nugent, Kevin Killian, Sister Merry Peter, and Sister Bambi of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
