It's people like Nico Muhly who make you realize how little you've accomplished. He has worked with Philip Glass (as an assistant, conductor, and editor), Björk (as pianist and string arranger), and Bonnie "Prince" Billy (likewise). He has received commissions to compose for Bard University and the Juilliard School of Music, and has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall and the Whitney Museum. Not bad for a Vermont lad born in 1981. Muhly's latest disc, Mothertongue, features three suitelike compositions with a synthesis of Glasslike minimalism, the austere tones of ancient European liturgical music, and traditional American folk.
