There are skate flicks and then there are skate flicks. Deathbowl to Downtown strives to hop the rail from skateboard movie to anthropological study by documenting how New York city adapted -- architecturally, legally, and psychologically -- to a burgeoning skate culture from the 1970s through the 1990s. Filmmakers Coan Nichols and Rick Charnoski, who shot Super 8 footage for Gus Van Sant's film Paranoia Park, blend interviews with seminal figures like the original Zoo York team and vintage skating footage (some of it Super 8). Narrated by Chloe Sevigny.
