For nearly 30 years Laibach has confounded, outraged, sometimes frightened, and always provoked audiences with its monolithic Wagnerian aesthetics and militaristic posturing. Recently, though, signs of a thaw have cracked the group's icy demeanor: Following a surprisingly catchy dance album, the band released Volk, a cycle of rewritten national anthems that leavened frontman Milan Fras' basso profundo vocals with featherweight female singers and spacious electro-classical arrangements. Volk even indulged in direct sociopolitical satire instead of the collective's notoriously impenetrable "ideological phraseology." A dramatic change of heart? Or just another act of ambiguous trickery?
