At some point in the past few years, monsters evolved from being slimy nightmares in our closets to cuddly bedside companions. Sure, they still think they’re scary, with their tentacles and their sharp fangs, but we know better (such widdle fangsy-wangsies!). So, really, there’s nothing to be afraid of when it comes to tonight’s Monster Art Rally. Not to be confused with the annual Monster Drawing Rally, it brings together hundreds of plush toys and custom vinyl creations from more than 50 artists. Consider foul one-eyed plushies from 12Punt3, Dan Goodsell’s terrifyingly unbuttered Monster Toast, mutant children from Kathie Olivas, and a fantastical puppeteering octopus from Lana Crooks, alongside works from lowbrow artists Leecifer, Jeff McMillan, and Cameron Tiede. To keep the creatures comfortable, the gallery has been transformed into a hair-raising forest of evil. Most frightening of all, the crazy crew of Kaiju Big Battel unleashes its barely contained live monster fights for the opening party. Who will save us?
