The term “fashionista” implies a kind of militant independence, but most people involved in the fashion industry instead famously and slavishly follow one another’s trends. Which is why we’re excited about the Bay Area Guide to Independent Fashion. Organized by Letitia Ntofon, who is about to publish a book by the same name, the all-day event showcases regional brands, eco-clothing, and craft. It also does not shy away from politics: a panel discussion at 5 p.m. addresses diversity (read: lack of) in the industry, takes a critical look at shows like America’s Next Top Model, and casts an eye on the current “Black Issue” of Italian Vogue. A runway show flaunts couture by the likes of R.A.G. Co-op, Hellyn Teng Mersereau, and Sarah Zins. Best of all, you can exercise your independent spirit at a bazaar (noon-4 p.m.) by buying wares from Oaklandish, Porcelynne Lingerie, Christine Uemura jewelry, Miss Velvet Cream, Evarize, and others. Maybe we need a buy-local clothing movement that parallels the food locavores: if you know where it came from, it’s all the more beautiful.
