For the better part of two decades, Swedish death-metal band Opeth has been redefining its genre with audacious experiments in heaviness. Marrying the complex dynamics of '70s prog and elegiac folk atmospheres to extreme riff brutality, the group's music is as achingly beautiful as it is skull-pulverizing. The outfit's latest effort, Watershed, finds former Arch Enemy guitarist Fredrik Åkesson ably replacing axman Peter Lindgren as Opeth continues to develop its uniquely ominous sound.
