When it was first announced that Sigur Rós was releasing a single titled "Gobbledigook," I was certain it was a hoax. Iceland's earnest classical-music-meets-space-rock avatars, actually lightening up? But it wasn't a joke after all, and the quartet's recent album, Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust (which, regardless of what the band may claim, loosely translates to "We'd Better Change Up the Formula Before People Grow Bored of Us"), is much less epic and weighty than its previous output. Like sonic counterpart Spiritualized, Sigur Rós has stripped things back, but the songs are still just as grand and emotionally affecting as always.
