Nuzzled in the liberal juggernaut that is San Francisco, it’s easy to forget how lucky we are. Then, fortunately, along comes something like Obama the Musical to remind us. Staged by Mica Phelan (aka ViviAnne ForeverMore), creator of the Monday-night drag event Tiara Sensation, which encourages guests to cobble together their own sparkly crowns from a craft “buffet” table, this Obama-inspired revue lovingly embraces everything that America’s far right wing despises. Queens of every background and dress size strut the stage, lip-synching in homage to Obama, while the audience participates in polls, rallies, and town hall–style debates. Where else but in San Francisco could the promise of exit polling sound so excitingly filthy? Obama the Musical promises to synergize all that McCain supporters fear into one ruffly ball of love.
