Budget Rock by the alphabet

Once all the other music festivals have their way with the locals, Budget Rock (www.myspace.com/budgetrock) comes in at the end of October to sweep up the trash – trashy rock 'n' roll, that is — which is collected into a lowbrow marathon of eating, drinking, and dancing. Punk and pop bands flood Oakland's Stork Club between Oct. 23 and 26, and, given the festival's penchant for celebrating basement party elementals with such flair, I offer this week the ABCs of Budget Rock:

Arithmetic
Four days + 30 bands + seven years of punk rock 'n' roll weekenders = Budget Rock.

Brunch, Pancake
Free 'cakes off the griddle for your Sunday grubbing.

Cheap
Budget Rock admission: $10-$12 a day, or $30 for the weekend (which works out to $1 a band).

Deodorant
A more effective stink deterrent than turning the band shirt inside out.

Equipment
The finest the Salvation Army has to offer.

Food
Bloody Mary garnish. See also "Brunch, Pancake," "Hot-Dog–Eating Contest," "Mexican Food," and "Taco Truck."

Garage Rock
Style du jour.

Hot-Dog–Eating Contest
Witness beer guts expand. (Saturday)

"I Want Fun"
Super-catchy Kinks-meet-Voidoids anthem for this —and every — weekend by the Pets (Sunday)

Jailbait
Seattle's Head courts babes with the song "I'm 35 Years Older Than You." Sample lyric: "Yes, it's true that I'm 35 years older than you/but that doesn't mean we can't get it on." (Sunday)

Keep Your Television
Oakland's married duo Touch Me Nots' sweet country-rock ode to boob tube kinship, "Hey Television." (Friday)

Look-Alike Contest
Don a Prince Valiant bob to celebrate Russell Quan from the Mummies ... and the Phantom Surfers ... and the Count Backwards ... and the Bobby Teens ... and the Flakes ... and two new bands since you started reading this sentence. (Thursday)

Mexican Food
With songs saluting everything from "Tamale Mama" to "Chorizo," The LaTeenOs evoke primal hunger with primitive rock 'n' roll. (Sunday)

Nothing People
Feedback hums, guitars shoot metallic rays, and sci-fi No Wavers have their new heroes. (Saturday)

Oldies
Roy Head (Friday) was rock 'n' rollin' at Texas sock hops before your parents first swapped spit. The dude can handle any mixture of country, rock, blues, and rockabilly.

Personal and the Pizzas
The band's elementary recipe: Take yer basic Stooges and Dictators pie, sauce with a Jersey 'tude, and season with extra Grease-y humor. Bake. (Sunday)

Quan, Russell
Celebrating his 50th birthday Thursday at a festival named for the mantra coined by his band the Mummies. (See also Look-Alike Contest)

Record swap
Vinyl give 'n' take (Sunday).

Supergroups
Reconfiguring of your favorite trash, pop, and noise rock idols: Mayyors, (Saturday –- Chris Woodhouse, Mark Kaiser, Julian Elorduy, John Pritchard); C'Mon Everybody (Thursday — Tina Lucchesi, Jay Rosen); Mercy Wifebeaters (Sunday — Russell Quan, Darin Raffaelli, Michelle Santamaria).

Taco truck
Parked in front of the Stork Club. Visit before digesting the LaTeenOs' set.

Underwear
What Budget Rock host — and bucktoothed bubblegum pop aficionado — Nobunny has been known to leave on when other clothing is discarded (although the ears also stay put).

Vomit
See also "Hot-Dog–Eating Contest," aka the scarf ... and barf.

Weed
Nodzzz's "I Don't Wanna SMK MRJWNA" is a call to get high, tucked inside a wiry punk tune that stays in your system longer than THC. (Saturday)

Xmas (Christmas) Island
The holidays have a new sound: steady guitar pop melodies, twee vocals, and lyrics about pretending not to care when someone stuffs your heart in a stocking. (Saturday)

"You Don't Like Rock 'n' Roll"
Girl groups and the Ramones filter into this poppy anthem by Hunx & His Punx that's anti-glue–sniffing, pro–rock 'n' roll. (Sunday)

Z
Make sure your band name has at least one. To wit: Minneapolis' Hypsterz (Thursday), San Mateo's Nodzzz (Saturday).
