Mmmm Cai?

Talented artists taking intelligent liberties with grand traditional forms – this is what we often wish for, especially in the dance world. At the Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company 20th Anniversary Home Season, that's exactly what we're going to get. Choreographer and former Shanghai Opera House dancer Cai likes showing off the beauty of Chinese women, and this performance includes the world premiere of a piece focused on just that, as inspired by classical paintings. The rest of the program is made up of audience favorites from the past, including "Silk Cascade," which uses traditional Chinese ribbon dancing to pay homage to Jackson Pollock's abstract paintings – Cai's also famous for her dancers' skillful manipulations of dramatic props. Cai points out that neither Chinese classicists nor American modern dancers would make the choices she does; only a Chinese American could mix it up like this.
