Steven Ellison is the great-nephew of the late great cosmic jazz pianist Alice Coltrane. He's making his own name in the music world, though, for crafting otherworldly, hip-hop-informed beats under the moniker Flying Lotus. His second album, Los Angeles (named for the city where he resides), came out on the venerable Warp Records over the summer, its single "Robertaflack" garnering international attention for funky, skittish rhythms and wispy vocals.
