Our Body Music, Ourselves

If music were a computer system, the industrial subgenre called E.B.M. (Electronic Body Music) would be verging on the dreaded "blue screen of death," i.e., total debilitating freeze-up. That's why groups like Spetsnaz are rebooting their machines to revive the genre's original sound: squirmy monophonic-synth basslines, steel-toed beats that stress the 2 and the 4, and bellowed vocals free of cheap distortion effects. Yes, now that you mention it, Spetsnaz does sound suspiciously like a late-'80s Nitzer Ebb cover band (or maybe an extratesty Depeche Mode). Yet these self-described Swedish "hooligans" exert a pure, physical form of dancefloor aggression, one that's refreshingly unpretentious in this era of Hot Topic boy bands posing as gloomy goth überlords.
