Jenny Scheinman's latest release is a self-titled album of captivating blues, roots, and haunting folk songs. This seeming shift in direction may surprise fans of the violinist and vocalist's other work. She was an early member of Charming Hostess, one of the East Bay freak scene's premier alt-rock groups of the '90s, and currently plays in a number of Bill Frisell's renowned jazz projects. But Scheinman's shift toward Americana is simply a return to her backwoods Northern California home, where she grew up picking, grinning, and singing her heart out.
