In the beginning, punk pitched a big tent. John Doe of X may have crooned like he was in a Nashville studio, recording with his heroes, but the band found privileged spots on the most disreputable punk stages thanks to Exene Cervenkas heartbreaking accompaniment and Billy Zooms speedy guitar. After X broke up, Doe went on to deepen his roots interest with solo albums; he also did a shocking amount of acting he has dozens of credits, including 18 episodes of Roswell and a bunch of other prime-time efforts, like Law & Order and CSI, which is delightfully odd. Now, 31 years after the band formed, its original members are back on tour, bringing back those delicious off-kilter harmonies in songs about loneliness, sex, death, and, better than nearly any band, Los Angeles.
