Life's Rich Pageant

Chinese New Year always conjures up the particularly San Franciscan memory of watching people animate fanciful paper dragons that dance through traffic — and, often, through raindrops or bitter cold. This year, Divine Performing Arts offers a warm, indoor alternative with its “Chinese New Year Spectacular” of singing, dancing, and acrobatics that celebrate traditional Chinese culture. The show isn’t solely Chinese, however. It’s backed by a live orchestra combining traditional instruments of that culture with those more familiar to a Western audience, bringing a full and unique cross-cultural sound not heard elsewhere. The Chinese New Year doesn’t technically begin until January 26, but the show rings in early tidings of the year of the Ox.
