Dengue Fever is one of America's weirder bands. The group comprises five slightly grungy indie boys playing music that combines '60s-tinged psychedelic rock with Cambodian pop, fronted by an actual Cambodian pop singer. Chhom Nimol's hypnotic onstage presence goes far beyond her physical beauty, though that's also considerable. She possesses an inner grace and delicacy earned singing karaoke in her home country. The band's three studio albums mix covers of Cambodian pop tunes and originals. Live, Dengue Fever is a blast and a half, Nimol's kittenish voice and gentle sway perfectly matching the band's blare.
