Kickin' BrassBy Ron NachmannPublished on January 05, 2009 at 3:59pmWhile you can still start an argument as to whether the Rebirth Brass Band is as big worldwide as the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, you can't question its New Orleans musical pedigree or its capability to funkify the city's century-old brass band tradition. Formed by brothers Philip and Keith Frazier in 1983 in the Tremé district — the Crescent City's musical ground zero — Rebirth has kept the art form relevant to today's youth. Throughout a dozen albums, the group infuses its repertoire with pumping tuba and trombone basslines and thick funk backbeats.
