Imagine you had a really hard time with spoken language. Further, what if it were obvious some people thought you didn't have emotions at all? If this was you -- autistic -- and you also had studied veterinary sciences for years, you'd be in a very, very good position to empathize with animals. Dr. Temple Grandin is this person, and her many books on the inner lives of animals are well-reviewed. She knows what to do if your pig is bored, and she knows why the lion in the zoo is pacing. Look carefully at the dogs sitting with her. They are happy. Dr. Grandin thinks her autism helps her understand them, and their faces say she's right.
