In his one-man show Devil in the Deck, Paul Nathan spins tales about Jack Swindle, a devilish con man who travels the world experiencing capital-letter Adventure and Intrigue. There’s also capital-letter Magic, but not just stories about magic: Nathan is a practiced tradesman in the dark art, so when he stops his tales for some sleight of hand, pay attention if you want your mind blown. His specialty is card tricks, and the awe reaches the back row thanks to an onstage screen. By mixing magic with storytelling, Devil in the Deck has a refreshing 19th-century take on the trade, in nice contrast to the excesses of people like Criss Angel and David Blaine. Nathan also provides extras during the two-week run, offering up such things as dinner and piñatas and dating games. Tonight, he invites some of his “most talented friends” onstage — we hope they’re mysterious.
